If an in-office electrocardiogram (EKG) doesn’t capture the electrical issues causing your symptoms, your provider may recommend Holter monitoring. At Advanced Health Associates, our experienced team specializes in advanced cardiac testing, including Holter monitoring, to help detect heartbeat irregularities and guide accurate treatment. If you’re experiencing heart-related symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out. Call today or request an appointment online to learn more about Holter monitoring.
Holter monitoring is a noninvasive test that records your heart’s electrical activity continuously for 24–48 hours (or longer if needed). Unlike a standard in-office EKG, which captures only a few seconds of heart activity, a Holter monitor tracks your heartbeat throughout your normal daily activities.
The device is small, battery-operated, and worn comfortably under your clothing. Some monitors transmit results in real time, while others store the data for your provider to review once the device is returned.
Your provider may recommend Holter monitoring if they suspect an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that didn’t appear during your brief EKG. Arrhythmias may cause your heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Symptoms may include:
Fast or pounding heartbeat
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Fainting or near fainting
Fatigue
Chest pain
Shortness of breath
Feeling of skipped or extra beats
Because arrhythmias can come and go, they may not appear during a short in-office test. Holter monitoring captures these episodes over a longer period, improving diagnostic accuracy.
There are two common types of Holter monitors:
Traditional Holter monitor: Adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to a small device worn at your waist or neck.
Patch-style Holter monitor: A small, wireless, adhesive device placed directly on your chest.
During monitoring, you can continue most daily activities, but you’ll need to avoid getting the device wet. Your provider may also ask you to keep a brief symptom diary, noting the time, activity, and type of symptoms if they occur. This helps match your symptoms with your heart’s electrical activity.
Once you return the monitor, your provider analyzes the recorded heart data. They review:
Heart rate patterns
Abnormal rhythms
Episodes of skipped, fast, or slow beats
Any changes that match your symptoms
Your provider then discusses your results and recommends treatment or further testing if necessary.
At Advanced Health Associates, you receive high-quality cardiac evaluation and personalized care to help identify the cause of your symptoms. Call the office today or request an appointment online to learn more about Holter monitoring.
