If you’re experiencing chest pain, fatigue, or limited exercise tolerance due to poor blood flow to the heart, your provider may recommend Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) therapy. At Advanced Health Associates, our experienced team offers EECP as a noninvasive, FDA-approved treatment that can improve circulation, reduce symptoms, and enhance quality of life. Call today or request an appointment online to learn whether EECP therapy is right for you.
Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a noninvasive, outpatient treatment designed to improve blood flow to the heart. During the therapy, inflatable cuffs are placed around the legs and inflate and deflate in sync with your heartbeat. This timed compression increases blood flow back to the heart and may help create new natural pathways around blocked arteries (collateral circulation).
EECP is often recommended for individuals with chronic stable angina or those who cannot undergo surgery such as stenting or bypass.
Your provider may recommend EECP if you experience symptoms caused by reduced blood flow to the heart, including:
Chest pain (angina)
Shortness of breath
Fatigue
Decreased exercise tolerance
Poor circulation
Symptoms that persist despite medications
EECP may also be suitable for patients who:
Are not candidates for angioplasty or bypass surgery
Prefer a non-surgical treatment option
Want to reduce reliance on medications
Have ongoing symptoms even after cardiac procedures
During the treatment:
You lie comfortably on a treatment table.
Cuffs are wrapped around your calves, thighs, and lower hips.
The cuffs inflate during the heart’s relaxation phase (diastole) and deflate just before the heart pumps (systole).
This action improves circulation, reduces the workload on the heart, and enhances oxygen delivery to the heart muscle.
Each session lasts about one hour, and a full course typically includes 35 sessions over several weeks.
Many patients experience improvements such as:
Reduced chest pain
Improved energy
Better exercise and activity tolerance
Decreased need for angina medications
Enhanced circulation
Better overall heart function
Benefits often last months or even years with proper heart-health management.
Yes. EECP is FDA-approved, noninvasive, and considered safe for most patients. It does not involve surgery, injections, or anesthesia.
Your provider will carefully evaluate your medical history to ensure EECP is appropriate for you.
At Advanced Health Associates, we are committed to offering safe and effective solutions like EECP therapy to support better heart health and improved comfort. Call the office today or request an appointment online to learn more about EECP and whether it may benefit you.
